Sunburst by Susan May Warren

Sunburst by Susan May Warren is the second installment of the Sky King Ranch series. It focuses on the youngest triplet, Ranger Kingston, a former SEAL who is on a mission to save his brother and the woman Ranger loves, Noemi Sutton. While the first book, Sunrise, was set completely in Alaska, Sunburst begins in Nigeria and ends in Alaska. Once again, Warren paints beautiful pictures of the landscapes so a reader can visualize the majesty of the surroundings. In fact, the covers for this series are amazingly beautiful.

What I Liked About Sunburst

First, I think Warren is the master of deep point of view. I’m always amazed at how I’m able to get inside the characters and feel what they feel. Over and over I just paused to think about how brilliant the writing was.

Second, Sunburst had a lot of funny moments. Even though the story was serious, Noemi and Ranger were glorious characters that made me laugh at how they thought and reacted. Perhaps my favorite line from Noemi was, “Yes, this was her problem. She had no situational awareness when it came to Ranger Kingston.” This made me laugh because she did have situational awareness when it counted to save her life.

Third, Ranger was the swoony hero. He wanted to fix problems and take care of people he loved. As the book progressed, you can see how he’d lived his entire life trying to protect his family and now Noemi.

Finally, I loved the overall theme of the book. “I will find you.” Ranger promised Noemi that he would find her, and he always does. Ultimately, the book emphasized how God is always with us and no matter how far we run, He will always find us. That’s a great comfort.

What You’ll Like About Sunburst

This is a love story, so if you like all the love feels, you’ll enjoy Sunburst. Ranger will face any danger, but he is hesitant to let himself love. His dad gets him all lined out though with this great line. “Love is the one thing that can change everything, Ranger. Don’t be afraid of it.”

For the action lover, you’ll find one harrowing experience after another – daring rescues, chase scenes, and a lot of close calls.

If you read the first book, you’ll see a gentler Dodge Kingston, which I really enjoyed. The interaction between the brothers is just what you imagine it might be.

Final Thoughts

The next book is Sundown and it focuses on Colt. The setup for Colt and Tae’s story will whet your appetite. And, of course, we’ll finally know how Tae and Noemi’s stories connect.

While I think you can read Sunburst first, it makes more sense if you read the books in order. You won’t fully understand what’s going on with Tae if you don’t read Sunrise first. But, both are worth the time to read.

Bottom line is I really enjoyed Sunburst.
