A Novel Proposal by Denise Hunter is another standalone beach novel Hunter is famous for. I adore this book. I was engaged from the start and so enjoyed the characters.
What I Liked About A Novel Proposal
One reason I think I liked this story so much was I could relate to the heroine’s dilemma. Sadie Goodwin is an author who writes westerns, which she loves. To get a new contract, her agent informs her she needs to change her genre. Sadie decides she’ll write romance except she is woefully lacking in romance experience. The scenes where she’s trying to write those first words are priceless. I’ve spent entire afternoons looking at a blank screen with a blinking cursor, so I could feel Sadie’s pain.
Another reason I liked the book is the characters. Sam Ford, the hero, starts out cranky and unfriendly. Still, I laughed at all his attempts to avoid the effervescent Sadie. Watching their romance develop had all the right feels. Both characters had what I consider very believable issues that they had to resolve for their relationship to work. Sam and Sadie had good chemistry.
Finally, there is a bit of a mystery, which helps Sadie overcome her writer’s block. I thought this was particularly clever.
What You’ll Like About A Novel Proposal
If you like Denise Hunter, this book will not disappoint you. It has just the right mix of humor and seriousness to be realistic.
You can do a little sleuthing while you enjoy the budding romance as well. I could be wrong, but I don’t think you’ll solve the mystery until the solution is revealed.
And, if you are interested in writing a romance, you’ll find the Romance 101 tidbits at the start of each chapter very informative. By the end of the book, you’ll know the formula all romance novels must follow.
Final Thoughts
A Novel Proposal entertained me. I didn’t want to stop reading the story until I finished it. Hunter knows how to write romance and if you like a light-hearted, for the most part, beach romance, this story will satisfy.
I received an advance read copy from Thomas Nelson through Netgalley; however, I am purchasing the paperback. I will read this again.
