The Shifting Current by Dani Pettrey concludes the Coastal Guardians series. This story focuses on Logan Perry and Emmalyne (Emmy) Thornton, two characters in the three previous books, who we’ve waited for to have their time in the spotlight.
What I Liked About The Shifting Current by Dani Pettrey
I know I say this a lot in my reviews, but I really liked the characters. Let’s face it, an author can have all the action and a great plot, but if the characters fall flat, you can’t really enjoy the book. Logan and Emmy have super chemistry. I enjoyed how their romance blossomed as they worked together to solve who killed Logan’s grandfather. Pettrey did a great job of capturing how love can get us through the hardest times.
Logan’s sorrow over the death of his grandfather seemed very real. I felt his loss, which proves Pettrey captured the emotions surrounding loss most of us can empathize with. And, of course, I loved that Emmy proved to be a strong female who knew how to support Logan.
The villain is dastardly indeed and uses his underlings to do his dirty work. Readers will not empathize with the bad guys, although for a short while I held out hope at least one of them had a redeeming quality. I was very happy when they all got the justice due them.
What You’ll Like About The Shifting Current
First, if you’re a Dani Pettrey fan, then you will like this book. It has all the action, suspense, and romance, you’ve come to expect in her books.
Second, as always, Pettrey weaves a strong faith message throughout the story. Every place she interjects Logan’s and Emmy’s faith feels natural, so it doesn’t seem contrived.
Finally, if you like the desert southwest, like I do, you’ll enjoy the setting of this book. More than once, I said to myself, I’ve been there.
Final Thoughts
This is a novella, but longer than most and really nothing seems rushed. When you read the last sentence, you’ll feel like you’ve read a full-length book.
The Shifting Current is a solid conclusion to the series and a story I’d read again.
