Leading With Questions by Marquardt and Tiede focuses on how leaders discover powerful answers by knowing how and what to ask. In this third addition, the authors interviewed more leaders and explored how to use questions in diverse settings. They also included new research and ideas on the best way for developing questioning leaders.

What I Liked About Leading With Questions by Marquardt and Tiede

First, I liked how simple this book is to understand. The authors present the material in common language with little jargon. If there is a term people may not be familiar with, they explain it thoroughly. An ordinary person can take this straightforward book and easily put it to use.

Second, I really enjoyed the leader examples. Stories are the best way to convey ideas and the leaders used in Leading With Questions offer great insight as to how well this questioning process can work. The examples were relevant and unbiased, and the book is packed with excellent stories.

Third, the research is thorough. If you’ve spent any time reading about leadership development, many of the names will be familiar, but there are other sources that add great value to the concepts discussed in the book. One useful section is the Biography section that tells you about the leaders quoted.

What You’ll Like About Leading With Questions

If you learn by example, then you’ll find many excellent stories that outline how the leaders interviewed used questions to improve their organizations.

For those who want data to back up the claims made, you’ll find that, too.

Finally, at the end of each chapter there are questions for reflection, which will give you an opportunity to test what you’ve learned as well as assess how well you use the concepts taught in the chapter.

Final Thoughts

I’m a curious sort, so I’ve marked all the areas where specific questions were provided for a multitude of scenarios. I want to try them out when I have the opportunity. I think this is a practical and useful book. Leaders who embrace asking questions as outlined in Leading With Questions could totally revolutionize the success of their organizations.
