Chaos by Ronie Kendig and Steffani Webb is the second novel in A Breed Apart – Legacy series published by Sunrise Publishing. Action-packed from the beginning, Chaos is Webb’s debut novel and I look forward to reading more stories by her in the future.
What I Liked About Chaos by Ronie Kendig and Steffani Webb
Like the first book in the series, Chaos has a hunky hero. Cathal McGowan is a retired Army ranger originally from the Emerald Isle and who still carries his Irish accent. To this I say Yes! Cathal is hired to find a missing couple and their adopted son who disappeared in the Philippines. The mission comes with a catch, though. Rio Silva, a headstrong but likable gal is the niece of the missing couple and she along with her father’s Belgian Malinois, Chaos, are teamed with Cathal.
The characters are solid and rub each other the wrong way at the start. Cathal is strong, smart, and a bit gruff at first, but underneath all his bluster is a gentle soul with a mountain-sized load of guilt. Rio has personal misconceptions that she struggles with, which makes her a bit prickly at first. Once readers learn about her past, most will sympathize with her. Chaos lives up to her name.
Webb does an excellent job of describing the Philippine scenery. I could imagine the jungle and feel the humidity. The food sounded yummy.
What You’ll Like About Chaos
If you’re a fan of Ronie Kendig, you’ll like Chaos. Webb nails the Breed Apart world. The scenes with Chaos will make dog lovers happy. Military working dogs as well as police dogs are amazing and readers get a glimpse of how magnificent they are. Webb used what I think is German commands which added realism since most MWDs and police dogs are trained in Dutch or German.
The action is non-stop but doesn’t go over the top. And the romance, for me, was just right. There are a few kissing scenes with the right amount of sizzle to satisfy the romantics.
Final Thoughts
There is a faith element but it isn’t heavy at all. No matter your beliefs, you won’t feel preached to while reading this book. There is some humor, which helps to break the tension. The best part for me was seeing Cathal and Rio come to terms with their pasts so that they were able to shed the weight of false self-beliefs.
