The Intersection Faith, Work, and Life—An Introduction to God’s Design for Integrated Living is a new book by Dr. Robert C. Varney and Hugh W. Brandt. It’s a short book with only 95 pages but don’t let its brevity fool you. It’s packed with wisdom.

What I Liked About The Intersection Faith, Work, and Life

One of the things I always worry about when I’m reading a faith-based book is will the authors contradict what God says to make the message more palatable. I’m happy to say, Varney and Brandt do not water down the Scriptures. They take certain passages like Genesis 2:15 and show how man is called to work even before the fall. The authors say, “Your work can be a window, offering others a glimpse of the world as God intended it ….”

Many people think they must keep their faith separate from their work, but the authors disagree. They believe God never wanted us to divide our lives between “sacred” and “secular.” They see work as the perfect place to bring restoration and redemption to the world. We don’t have to witness to people; however, we should be a witness of grace to others.

Varney and Brandt provide examples throughout that help make their points more understandable. I’m a story person so seeing examples showed really how easy it is to live your faith at work.

What You’ll Like about The Intersection Faith, Work, and Life

The book is divided into three parts. The first part explores how God designed work and purpose. Part Two explains common Christian responsibility where they lay out how we can be true apprentices of Jesus. Finally, in part three, they show how each individual has a role to play in God’s restoration story.

The authors use language every person can understand. The simplicity of it makes it seem doable. And in the Appendix, they provide resources and additional stories that can be used to equip you to live out your faith.

If you like to reflect on what you’ve read and how it applies to you, you’ll have plenty of opportunity. At the end of each chapter there are questions for you to contemplate.

Final Thoughts

The authors state they hope the book “will offer heart-level transformation that will reveal a new and revitalized way of living into God’s plan.” If a person takes the time to answer the questions and then prays about the truths revealed, I can see that real transformation could occur and others would be able to see God working in you.
