Chiseled on the Heart: A Christmas Legacy Novella Collection spans roughly a hundred years starting with the American Revolution and ending post-Civil War. Comprised of four novellas, the thread that ties the stories together is carvings that make up a nativity.
Key Things About Chiseled on the Heart: A Christmas Legacy Novella Collection
This collection gave me the opportunity to read stories by three authors I’ve never read before. The Gift of a Lamb by Elaine Cooper is first in the collection. She’s a new author to me. Because this story was set at the beginning of the American Revolution, people talked differently back then, and at times this made it a little harder to read. I think the characters were likable, and in many ways, this was the saddest story of the four. Take heart, though, it had a happy ending.
A Lasting Legacy by Cynthia Roemer, also a new author to me, begins in 1814 amidst the War of 1812. Daniel Hawkins is the hero, who finds his purpose after a life-changing war injury. His wife Maggie is strong and a good match for Daniel. I could sympathize with Daniel and admired Maggie for her continued devotion to him.
Healing within the Pieces by Candace West, another new author, is the story of Nathaniel Hawkins and Delia Evans. Nathaniel in many ways was a Christ-like character that while wronged had the ability to forgive the terrible things done to him. Delia was a delight and was perfect for Nathaniel. Daniel and Maggie made a cameo in this, which was especially nice.
The final story by Kelly Goshorn, The Christmas Carving, was my favorite. Kelly is truly a gifted writer and her story showed how we shouldn’t let bitterness get a hold on us because it can keep us from fellowshipping with God and living the life, He intends for us. Wyatt Hawkins let a tragedy wreck his life with Madelyn Cunningham. Despite his gruffness, he’s a character you’ll empathize with. Madelyn had spunk and a heart of gold. You’ll love her because she doesn’t give up.
Final Thoughts
I enjoyed each novella and think they all pointed to the true meaning of Christmas. Love and forgiveness free us and knowing the One who showed the greatest love of all changes lives.
