How to Elevate Your Emotional Intelligence: A Parable That Reveals the Path to Better Relationships and a Happier Life by Kathy Stoddard Torrey is a unique book.
What I Liked About How to Elevate Your Emotional Intelligence
Torrey’s book is short and simply written; however, that doesn’t mean there isn’t a lot of meat to it. She outlines five steps that can help readers improve their emotional intelligence. Each step is carefully explained and modeled, so you can see how it should work.
Another aspect I liked was a summary at the end of each chapter. So, before you move on, you have a quick review of the key points you read about.
Finally, I liked the exercises. I thought they were easy to understand. One exercise was to keep a gratitude journal, which I can see would help you end each day on a positive point. If you’ve read many business books, some of the exercises like determining your beliefs, values, etc. will be familiar, but it never hurts to revisit these things.
What You’ll Like About How to Elevate Your Emotional Intelligence
If you’re like me, you’ll appreciate the simplicity of the book. So, often you read about a topic like emotional intelligence and find yourself thinking what did I just read. Only one section got really technical which had to do with the autonomic nervous system. I found it interesting and informative.
If you enjoy learning about topics through a parable, Torrey’s book should satisfy you. It’s different in that the coach in this story is dead. Yes, it stretches your imagination while giving you useful information.
Final Thoughts
In the final chapter, Torrey talks about “Cancel that order!” It seems like a great tool to use to deal with negative thoughts to create a peaceful foundation.
