The Cairo Curse by Pepper Basham

The Cairo Curse by Pepper Basham picks up where The Mistletoe Countess ended. Freddie and Grace are off to Egypt for their honeymoon only to become entangled in a web of intrigue.

What I Liked About The Cairo Curse

Did I mention Freddie and Grace are one of my favorite couples? In The Cairo Curse, Grace continues to offer the soul-soothing balm Freddie so desperately needs. Grace is refreshing and kind. She knows how to love not just Freddie but all the souls who desperately need it. Zahra, the street orphan, says this about Grace, “She paints sunshine with her words.” I love that. Mr. Elliott agrees by saying, “Her faith helps her see sunshine, I believe.” And from Freddie – “Though he couldn’t imagine anyone proving a better influence to a broken person than his wife. She had a way of accepting someone as they were and proceeding to lavish the very best faith upon them, as if she saw them as they could be instead as they were.” If we could all be more like Grace, the world would be a better place.

The mystery kept me guessing. According to Grace, “… everything was not as it seemed. Her tingling scalp confirmed her suspicions. And her scalp was never wrong.” My scalp didn’t tingle but I didn’t know the villain until the end.

And I love how Basham is able to weave in so many truths that we tend to forget. Freddie to Mr. Elliot – “But keeping to the view that my identity is in Christ helps place the proper importance in the proper places, I think.” Here’s another from Freddie – “I’m still learning, but God is slowly teaching me that I am not to be defined by my past, my relations, or my station, but by Him.”

What You’ll Like About The Cairo Curse

If you enjoy humor mixed in with solid truth, you’ll enjoy this book. There are multiple laugh out loud moments in this story. And Freddie’s befuddlement over his wife’s antics helps cut through the seriousness of the mystery.

If you’re a fan of ancient Egypt, you’ll enjoy the scenes in the tombs and the history of the Pharaohs. I actually learned a lot about Akhenaten that I found fascinating.

Final Thoughts

Pepper Basham fans won’t be disappointed in The Cairo Curse. It has all of the elements we’ve grown to love about her books – endearing characters, delightful banter, and perfectly placed truths that show what a beautiful God we have.

I received an advance reader’s copy through Netgalley. However, I have purchased the paperback to add to my ever-growing Pepper Basham collection.
