The Undercover Heiress of Brockton by Kelly J. Goshorn is a delightful novel. I’m not a big historical romance reader, but Goshorn is a must-read author for me.
What I Liked About The Undercover Heiress of Brockton
Henrietta “Etta” Maxwell was a fantastic character. Her dual life as an heiress and the hard-hitting investigative reporter Henry Mason made for many entertaining moments in this book. I could feel for her, trying to live her dream when 1905 journalism was strictly a man’s world. Her romantic interest, Leo Eriksson, a hunky Brockton firefighter, will win your heart if for no other reason because he supports Etta’s dream.
The background for the story is completely true, and I’m always amazed at how an author can take an actual story and weave in a purely fictional scenario at the same time. Goshorn does a superb job with this real-life tragedy that becomes the central focus of the book.
Will someone expose Etta? That’s the question that will keep readers turning the pages. I won’t give it away.
What You’ll Like About The Undercover Heiress of Brockton
If you’re a fan of early 20th century history, you’ll enjoy this book. Goshorn researches her stories extensively, and I learned a lot about life in 1905.
The romance is sweet and very clean. Leo and Etta’s romantic interactions won’t offend.
There are plenty of comical moments to make you laugh despite the tragedy unfolding. Much of it occurs when Leo is interacting with Henry. Priceless!
Final Thoughts
Forgiveness is the theme, and I could understand the hesitancy of one character to let go of the hurt. No spoilers, so you’ll have to read it to know what I’m talking about.
The Undercover Heiress of Brockton is the second book in the Enduring Hope series; however, it is a standalone. Each novel in the series will deal with a different tragedy, so you don’t have to read them in order.
