Truths Found in The Chase

July 3, 2021 | Book Reviews

There are many truths found in The Chase by Lisa Harris. The second book in the US Marshals series picks up three months after the first book ended. Madison James and Jonas Quinn are back and are pursuing a gang of bank robbers. There’s a lot of action, a good amount of suspense, and several twists and turns. There’s also a good faith element with some excellent Biblical truths interspersed.

Truth One – Surrendering

Madison is a good US Marshal. And she’s using her skills to try to solve the murder of her husband that has turned into a cold case. She’s a problem-solver by nature, who wants to be in charge. At one point she tells her sister, “I know I have to let go and let God take over…At least, that’s what I’m trying to do, but surrendering has never been easy for me.” This is something I can relate to, because I think I have to do it all by myself. But God’s still God and He’s got everything under control if I’ll let go.

Jonas also needs to surrender the guilt he feels for what happened to his former girlfriend. He overcompensates by being too over-protective of Madison, which creates problems for him. He’s also learning to let go and let God.

Truth Two – Thankfulness

Several of the truths found in The Chase are provided by secondary characters. One such character, Edward Langston, reminds Madison of how important it is to be thankful. “Sometimes, we just have to thank the Good Lord for bringing blessings into our lives, and then when it’s time, we have to let them go.” The letting go is the hard part. Madison built a wall around her heart after the death of her husband and doesn’t intend to let herself love again. She’s forgotten the blessing.

It’s easy to forget to thank the Lord for the blessings when we feel like we’ve been robbed of things we love the most. Edward says, “You can’t let what was taken away from you stop you from living again…life doesn’t always give us what we expect, but God does heal the brokenhearted.” Jonas has started to learn this truth by the end of the story, but Madison still has a ways to go.

Truth Three – Hope

God sees everything and nothing that happens surprises Him. We may not understand what He’s up to and we may not like it even if we do understand. But He knows what’s best for us. Near the end, Madison tells Jonas, “…He (God) sees everything that’s happening with every single one of us. And that always gives me enough hope to keep going.” And that is a truth we can take heart in. God is our hope if we will grab on to Him.

The Chase is a clean, entertaining read with nice character development. Madison and Jonas solve the main crime, but we’re going to have to wait until the final installment to know who killed Madison’s husband.
